Kate MacDowell

kate macdowell, originally uploaded by nrillustration.

I just picked up the latest issue of Hi Fructose, a worthwhile contemporary art magazine, and discovered sculptor Kate MacDowell. Her porcelain sculptures look like classical studies of figure and nature, but with a twist. Most of her work , like the "Canary" pieces above, is a commentary on the state of the environment. MacDowell says, "The first calualties are always the very small animals. Those are the animals that go extinct first and people don't really notice because they're so small." The interview is definitely worth a read, plus check out her website to see more gorgeous work.
