People are doing some amazing things to customize their backgrounds nowadays. If you're feeling ambitious, go whole-hog and customize the entire display like the top photo here from Painkilla05. Aside from being a great visual design, I'm impressed by the amount of tweaking it must have taken to make this work. Check out this and other customizations on

If you're less ambitious or just don't want to invest the time, there are plenty of great free wallpapers out there. By far my favorites are at the
Hubble Telescope site. The bottom photo currently adorns my desktop (this happens to be the Southern Ring Nebula if you were wondering). I like that the dark edges leave space to read all the junk that surrounds my screen.
