Poker Pups

While reading up on yesterday's big-eyed children post, I was reminded of the classy poker dog art. Apparently there was a series of these paintings created by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge to advertise cigars for Brown & Bigelow around 1903. Wikipedia claims that the poker dogs became "derisively well-known in the United States as examples of mainly working-class taste in home decoration" (love the wording). I'm sure no one would argue that boozing K-9s are high-class art, but my hat's off to Mr. Coolidge for his ability to introduce the bizarre into homes across the country. Cheers.

  1. You have managed to creep me out two days in a row. I remember this or a similar picture in my great aunts home!

  2. This was not in your grandparent's home. However, I do think it was in my grandparent's home.
