Lovejoy Columns

Portland has some fantastic public art which is sometimes created almost by accident. The column above is from a train station that was torn down several years ago. The artwork was done by Athanasios Efthimiou Stefopoulos (aka "Tom"), a Greek immigrant who worked as a watchman for the railroad. When not busy keeping watch, he was busy painting the inside of the rail buildings. Portlanders are trying to preserve what they can of his work and this pillar stands in a courtyard in the Pearl District.
