Big Eyes

While writing the last blog (about moody girl art) I was reminded of the big-eyed children that used to hang on the walls of my grandparents' home. I'm not sure how this disturbing genre became popular in the 60s and 70s but most of the wide-eyed babies (and puppies) looked like they were being punished for something really awful.

I remember an upsetting picture of a weepy street urchin staring down at me in the bedroom I used to sleep in when I visited. I tried to find that painting to post here but didn't run across it. The pic above is by an artist called Lee and features sad children that actually look a lot like Donny and Marie...

This is the web of the Keane Eyes Gallery. Keane was the start of the big eye paintings.
