Consuming Finnish Design

Yes, this is my third blog in a row showing postage stamps, but there are some really cool designs out there and I feel compelled to show them to you. These are from Finnish Artist Kaj Franck. Franck was one of the leaders of ever-popular midcentury Finnish design. Like many influential Artists of his time, he designed about a million other things as well (textiles, furniture, interiors, tableware, etc).

The Arabia Finland website describes Franck's philosophy this way, "had a strong social conscience that was aroused particularly during the war. He was interested in mass production and the possibilities of technology to produce diverse practical objects at a reasonable price". I think it's interesting that this way of thinking has, for better and worse, shaped a lot of our current consumer culture... but that's a much longer blog post for another time!
